Patients will typically see the full results of a hair transplant between 10 and 14 months after the procedure. However, by around six months, many patients will begin to notice visible improvement as hair growth progresses, with further maturation continuing over time.
In some cases, patients may only require a single hair transplant procedure; however, this depends on individual factors such as the progression of hair loss and adherence to recommended aftercare and medical guidance.
At Hair Transplants of the Royal Liver Building, hair transplant procedures may take approximately three to four hours for smaller cases. More extensive procedures may take six to seven hours. The duration of your hair restoration procedure depends on the number of grafts required, which is assessed during your consultation.
During treatment, patients may take breaks as needed and can watch television, read a magazine, or listen to music.
Most patients are comfortable during and after hair transplant surgery. After administering local anaesthetic, the treated areas are typically numb, meaning patients should not feel pain during the procedure, although sensations of pressure or movement may still be experienced.
FUE is a widely performed hair transplant procedure with a strong safety profile when carried out in a clinical setting.
Some temporary side effects may occur following surgery, which typically resolve within a few days. These can include sensitivity, swelling, and bruising.
Non-surgical hair replacement systems provide a non-surgical option for improving the appearance of hair density. These systems are temporary and require ongoing maintenance and regular replacement to maintain results.
At Hair Transplants of the Royal Liver Building, our surgical team redistributes hair follicles from the donor area to areas of thinning or hair loss. Once transplanted, these follicles typically continue to grow in a similar way to hair in the donor area.
If FUE hair transplant procedures are performed successfully, results are generally long-lasting. However, outcomes can vary between individuals depending on factors such as ongoing hair loss progression and individual characteristics.
Working after surgery depends on your job and the activity, you will be carrying out. If your job is not physical or too strenuous, we advise you to return to work after a couple of days generally. If your job is particularly physical, the advisory return to work is 14 days. Avoid tight hats or helmets for at least one month.
Hair growth can vary from patient to patient. It is common for each transplanted follicle to enter a temporary resting phase of around 8–12 weeks before new growth begins.
By around six months, patients will typically notice visible new hair growth, with further thickening and maturation continuing over time.
Hair transplant procedures involve redistributing existing hair follicles from the donor area to areas of thinning or hair loss. This does not create new hair in areas where follicles are not transplanted.
In cases of more significant hair loss, careful use of available donor hair can help improve overall coverage and create a more balanced appearance, particularly in the frontal scalp and hairline area.
Hair restoration is designed to enhance the appearance of the hairline and frame the face, with outcomes varying between individuals depending on hair characteristics and degree of hair loss.
Hair restoration surgery can be performed at any age. However, the patient's age is a vital factor to be considered. Ideally, the patient should be at least 30 years of age. Although, under certain circumstances, younger patients may be considered. Our expert team of surgeons will be able to discuss any concerns or questions you may have.
Hair transplant surgery can be repeated, but this is determined following assessment by the surgeon. It depends on factors such as donor hair availability, quality, and the extent of ongoing hair loss.
In some cases, more than one hair transplant procedure may be suitable; however, this varies between individuals and must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
POTENTIAL RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS
While hair transplants are generally considered safe and minimally invasive, all surgical procedures carry some risks.
Potential complications may include:
Swelling – Mild swelling around the forehead and eyes may occur but typically resolves within 3–7 days.
Bleeding & Bruising – Some minor bleeding at the donor or recipient sites may occur and usually settles within the first 24 hours.
Folliculitis (pimple-like bumps) – Temporary inflammation of hair follicles may develop in the weeks following surgery and usually resolves with time.
Temporary numbness – Some numbness or tingling in the donor or recipient areas may persist for a few weeks.
Hair growth direction variation – In some cases, transplanted hairs may grow at different angles depending on healing and placement.
Shock loss – Some existing surrounding hairs may temporarily shed after surgery, with regrowth commonly occurring over subsequent months.
Seek medical advice if you experience:
Persistent redness, swelling, or discharge (which may indicate infection).
Excessive pain that does not improve with prescribed pain relief.
Prolonged bleeding beyond the first 24 hours.
Unexpected or excessive shedding beyond typical post-operative shedding.
POST-OPERATIVE CARE
Immediate Aftercare (0-7 Days)
- Keep your head elevated when sleeping to reduce swelling.
- Avoid touching, scratching, or rubbing the transplanted area.
- Use sterile saline spray (as prescribed) to keep the grafts hydrated.
- Do not wash your hair for 48 hours after surgery.
- Avoid direct sunlight, excessive sweating, and dusty environments.
Hair Washing Routine (After 48 Hours)
- Wash your hair gently using a paraben-free baby shampoo as per the doctors instructions.
- Use lukewarm water and avoid direct water pressure on the grafts.
- Pat dry with a clean towel—never rub.
Activity Restrictions
- No strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for two weeks.
- No swimming, saunas, or steam rooms for four weeks.
- Avoid tight hats or helmets for at least one month.
Patience is key—final results take up to 18 months for full hair maturity.
